Depends how much money you have to spend but I would go for a Land Rover Discovery diesel they can start at around £1000-£1500 for a early 200TDI (built from 1989) and go right up to nearly new Discovery 3 for around £25,000

I own the Marathon seat and LOVE it. Wonderful choice! It has lasted and is so easy to use. Your mommy instinct is correct, DO NOT buy a used seat because you cannot be sure if it has ever been in an accident before. Once a car seat has been involved in an accident, it is potentially compromised. And the compromise can't always be seen with the naked eye - the car seat might look just fine on the outside, but the structural integrity of it has been weakened due to the accident. This puts the child at extreme risk should another accident occur. My local police department frowns on car seat re-sales for this very reason. Just spend the money, don't be penny wise and pound foolish when it involves your little one. PS Car seats are a one time use item and now come with expiration dates on them (in US it is 6 years) because the plastics eventually break down making them brittle. Also if you buy used, you will not be able to register it. If you don't register it, you will not be alerted to any recalls if they should exist. So... not only would you possibly be buying a compromised seat, you would be spending $150 on a seat you now can only use for 2 years.

We have a Vauxhall Zafira and its perfect for that use. If your hard for cash you can get a good second hand one for less than £10000, but make sure you go for deisel if its got a high mileage. Theres plenty of room in the boot and you can get a roofbox if you need additional space, for instance if you plan on bringing bodyboards and such like. The seven seats are also handy on occasions, but with the 2 back seats down there is a lot of backspace for camping. =D

I have a Vauxhall Zafira, its a 7 seater people carrier but the back seats fold flat right down into the floor so they become a very big boot space and the seats in front of them go back and forth too!! You can fit a huge amount in the back of my car and I would recommend it for any camping trip!! We are hoping to get away camping in the summer!! Happy Camping xxx

If you can forget the badge snobbery it has to be a Skoda Octavia, either saloon or estate. Check out the payload and fuel consumption. I have an Octavia and regularly return 55 mpg. Forget the badge, it really is a VW in disguise.

Your options are many:

Large estate (Vectra, Mondeo, etc. or even older a Scorpio or Omega, or the classic Volvo).
MPV (Espace, Galaxy, Zafira, etc.)
Van-based car (Kangoo, Berlingo, Partner, Doblo, Caddy)
SUV (Discovery, Shogun, LandCruiser, Grand Vitara)

Depends what you want, what else you use it for, how much you want to spend, what the neighbours will think (if you care), that sort of thing.

Depends whether you want estate, saloon or hatch. Won't get so much in saloon, get most in estate, with added benefit that some come with roofbars for a roofbox. Peugeot 406 Estate is quite roomy, and reliable, Vauxhall Vectra hatch/estate not bad, Mondeo Estate not bad either
