This is why:
"One morning Allah's Messenger was silent with grief. Maymunah said: Allah's Messenger, I find a change in your mood today. Allah's Messenger said: Gabriel had promised me that he would meet me last night, but he did not meet me. By Allah, he never broke his promises; and Allah's Messenger spent the day in this sad (mood). Then it occurred to him that there had been a PUPPY under their cot. He gave an order and IT WAS TURNED OUT. He then took some water in his hand and sprinkled it on the place. When it was evening Gabriel met him and he said to him: You promised me that you would meet me the previous night. He said: Yes, but we do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture. So the very next morning HE COMMANDED THE DOGS TO BE KILLED. He announced that the dog kept for the orchards SHOULD ALSO BE KILLED, but he spared the dog used for the protection of extensive fields (or big gardens)." -- Hadith - Muslim, Narrated Maymunah (emphasis mine)

Islam is not against of dogs. If your friend doesn't let the dog into the room which she prays in there , there wouldn't be any problem at all. If she can keep him in a room or a special place then it'll be fine.
In the story of the men of the cave in Qur'an Sura 18, it becomes clear that God sees dogs as part of men's lives.
18:18 "You would think that they were awake, when they were in fact asleep. We turned them to the right side and the left side, while their dog stretched his arms in their midst."
Hadith tells us that angels won't enter a room where there is a dog. That means that for 309 years that the sleepers were in the cave, no angel ever entered. Yet God says "We turned them...." The use of "we" clearly indicates the participation of angels. There is absolutely no reason to mention the dog as part of this story, except to make it clear to future generation that dogs are permitted to live among people, right "in their midst." And 18:22 clearly shows that the dog was counted right along with the believers.
Peace and blessings

According to Islam the angels won't enter a room where a dog is.
Your friend can have a dog, anyone can. So, let us say that she keeps the dog outside and feels compelled to bring it in to protect it from the elements she is free to do so. I've seen Muslims with dogs and that is how they did it. Brought the dog in put him into a room and that was it. There is something also about a dogs mouth being dirty (still can't get past that one as their mouth is cleaner than ours-so I've heard years ago.)
Tell her good luck.

Actually, dogs are considered dirty... see, when you get some dog's saliva or urine on anything it will get it dirty and therefore you must wash up from it, and it will cause your home to be considered dirty. But there are some cases where you can own a dog, when in farms or for protective reasons.
Just because dogs aren't allowed in houses does not mean that we have the right to torture, kill, or treat them wrongly. Animals in Islam have rights as well as humans.
Anyway, years ago scientists discovered that there is some type of germ ( I am not exactly sure what was it ) which is considered unhealthy, and the only way to get rid of it is by cleaning whatever part that had contact with the saliva and/or urine with dirt.
In the prophet told us when that happens we are supposed to wash up 7 times and once with dirt..

Sister meg got a misinterpretation there well as far as i know you cant keep dogs inside your house but you can keep em outside for safe guardin and stuff and the prophet had only once ordered for the dogs to be killed because of them being infected with rabies he feared that they might bite & kill the ppl since there wasnt any known cure at that time death was the only option

Muslims can keep dogs not inside the home but out side in open courtyard only, for guard etc.
We believe the angels of mercy not come in the home where a dog is kept. As angels of mercy help us keeping us away from
evils.

Its not not allowed in Islam.
Its nothing to do with Islam. Its Arabic tradition in arabic countries.
If she doesn't want to adhere to the tradition, she's not offending anyones religion. Especially her own.
Like Meg said, its written in the hadith.
The Hadith are comparable to the Gospels in the New Testament as witness to the Messenger, while the Qur'an itself is comparable to the Five Books of Moses which came directly from God.
The Qur'an itself is a book of emmenance, to be followed to bring yourself to be the best you can be.
It says nothing about dogs and not to keep them.
If it were wrong to keep them, the Qur'an would tell you it is wrong.
And I just want to take this oppotunity to say that the people in this thread that have denounced Islam as evil, or brutal or whatever, are foolish people and shouldn't be ignorant enough to make judgements on things they know zero about.

Dogs cannot be cleaned even if you bathe them. It is a matter of hygiene. You can keep it in the garden (outside the house) all the time, but never inside. It will shed hair, Silva might be drooping all the time....yuk. Have you noticed that the cat digs to hid its urine or ....? while the dog "does it anywhere in the open"!! I admire dogs' loyalty, that some humans do not have, but I never touch one. You will never see a Muslim kiss a dog or allow it to lick him/her. We cannot tolerate how unclean they are. That is all.

It's a silly law. If she wants a dog, get one!!! I have 2. They're cute but are also protective. You don't really need a burglar alarm when you've got a dog. My Muslim friend has one. He is her baby!!! xxx
