I remember when I was 13 (now in mid-30s) I was giving my Mom a difficult time. I was taking advantage of the fact that my Dad was on a business trip and my Mom had injured her wrist a few months before. I made a point of saying well there's nothing you can do about it because you can't spank me with that wrist, ha ha. Oh was I wrong! She drove me to the local police station and asked to have one of the police officers to have a "chat" with me. He and my mom and I went into this room. Then he yelled at me, took off my belt, pulled me over his knee like I was 5, and just warmed up my butt just like he "would have done to his own kids" I was very very embarrassed and cried, and he told me he didn't want to see me back and I better respect my Mom from now on. I apologized to my Mom afterwards and had a sore bottom for several days afterwards until when my Dad got home, I got it again and sore for several more days!

TImes sure have changed, I can't imagine this being allowed today?

You can say that again. Times sure have changed. I don't think there was anything wrong with all that. You can't do that now days and the kids think they can walk all over you.

Since this person is to become a parent figure and will be one of the people who corrects the child on a daily basis, the I would say in this particular situation that was acceptable. Trying to open a gun safe is a very dangerous thing and I'm sure at 7 years old the child knew better. The only thing I would have changed was I would never spank a child on the bare bottom and I would have called my partner to let them know what happened and how it was handled. Also the other child should have received the same consequence as well. If it is a friend's child or relative's child, unless you have permission to spank them I would not and even if I was given permission I would probably still not spank another child that was not my own. You never know what kind of accusations parents will conjure up if you do, even with permission.

That is completely appalling. Your mother could have asked him to yell at you as an authority figure but not to touch you like that. It's not ok that she did that and it's not ok that he did that. Don't think otherwise. That would not be allowed today and shouldn't have been then either. At 13 you should not be spanked let alone by a stranger. Wasn't there an aunt around that could have done it or just waited for your father to get home from his trip? Utterly bizarre.

yes times have changed for sure today that wouldn't work. Most cops would have just laughed at her but in those days children learned to respect parents because that was exceptible. Today they are more likely to put you in jail for spanking your kid then to give them "a talking to". I had a nabour who would tie two little boys to a tree like dogs because they would run away otherwise while she babysat them now that is something she would have been locked up for child abuse if she were to do that today but at that time it was just something that went on. Sad really that is why children have no respect for parents and adults in genreal no disapline (No not sad that we can't tie them to trees that was wrong totaly but sad that we can't spank our children when they need it).

if u turned out better because of what he did good for you. my step mother was hard on me when i was younger and i would have to say her being like that towards me saved me from becomming like the girls around me. i am sure your mother did it out of love even though you probally did not see it that way at the time. this is pretty much rhetorical but i am glad u shared ur thoughts. i would have to say i agree with u to a point. i think if disapline went back to the way it was before there would not be so many spoiled brats running around and destroying this country. no more school shootings etc.... and i am 23 i have seen a lot. well good day to u

It obiviously made an impression on you. Today it would be child abuse. I'm in my fifties and can remember having to get my own switch so mom could spank me. Times have sure changed!

No one should hit a child for any reason, ever! What happened to you when you were 13 was horrible and totally uncalled for. That's abuse by today's standards. What a message to send to a girl in a delicate time of her life.

I am so sorry this happened to you. This is completely appalling. I really dont know what to say. I am shocked.

How awful. No matter how "bad" you were being, that whole episode in your life should have never happened. That was bad judgment on your mom's part, and who the hell was that guy to oblige to such a cruel and unusual punishment. That would have given any normal teenager issues. Let's hope things like that do not happen now-a-days, but unfortunately, I believe it has gotten worse on a lot of different levels.
