On the contrary, I have written numerous tickets for following too closely. It is very dangerous, and I have had some to actually do it to me while I was in my patrol vehicle.

We do need to be able to see the distance that the car is traveling behind you. If we are in the same line of traffic, by the time we get close enough to observe it, the other driver has usually backed off by then. We cannot just go to the judge and say, "Well, he looked like he was traveling too close to the other vehicle." We have to know for a fact. It's better for us to be able to say to the judge that the offender was approximately one car length away from the other car and they were traveling at 55 mph.

Don't let the offensive drivers get to you. Do like Santabud said, and try to let them pass whenever it is feasible. You just keep up the good work on being a good defensive driver.

Cops like to ticket for speeding. They have radar record as proof. When you are being tailgated, lightly touch you brakes so your brake lights come on without you really slowing down. Do it a few times. That will get rid of the tailgater.

Never say NEVER...my sister got a ticket for following too closely, & I would bet she deserved it!! I know what you mean, & I too am no turtle on the road.

The answer to your question is how the officer can prove the charge in court. Any ticket they write may be challenged by the defendant, so an officer needs specific details to convict.

Tailgating is not as easy to prosecute as say, speeding because the officer really needs to be in a position to accurately guage distance between cars & they usually aren't in that position.

Try to let them pass as possible, don't give them a reason to go off, as there are plenty of loose cannons out there!!
