I am making mashed potatoes and we don't have any potatoes in the house. Instead of buying a huge bag, I only want to buy the amount I need (unless it turns out to be more expensive). The recipe calls for two pounds of potatoes. Does anyone know approximately how many potatoes that is?

Hi There,
There are 3-4 medium potatoes in each pound. So for your dinner 6-8. A medium potato is about the size of an index card.
Happy Cooking!

It truely depends on the size of the potato. I would be missleading you if I told you it was 8 or something. Most grocery stores have a scale in the produce aisle. I would weigh them up there. And if by chance they don't have a scale then pick another item that weighs 2 lbs and compare it with the bag of potatoes you select. Use yourself like one of those old balance scales and remove or add potatoes as you think is necessary. Good luck.

It depends on the potato. If you want baking potatoes it is about 4. B-potato will be about 25.

Also, most produce sections do have scales that you can weigh on. If they dont try the bulk section.

look for the scales in the shop and weigh the spuds in the shop add a little for peelings
or pick up a bag of sugar and use this to judge the weight of spuds, as this weighs 2lb

well a pound is like 3600 calories so two pounds would be like 7200 calories a idaho potatoe has 120 calories so 7200/120 is about 6 potatoes.

Your grocery store should have scales. If they dont, I would say two big baking taters would be close.
