I took my Shih Tzu in for a bath and hair cut. She has been doing this to him for a couple of years. She said he has lost weight and is losing his hair. I took him to the vet and he took a blood test and said his thyroid is in the grey area and that his liver enzymes are off. I have to give him an antibiotic and have him checked again in 2 weeks. He is 10 1/2 years old. Any thoughts?

The Dr. put him on anibotics. He didn't give any medication for the thyroid. He said it could be that his teeth need cleaning. He said to give him the antibotics and he will check him again in 3 months. 10 1/2 is not that old for a Shih Tzu. They are a small dog and live to be 15-16 years old.

maybe the 1st thing is to kill any infection that might be there. then after the meds he is going to then focus on the liver and thyroid problems just take one step at a time and trust the vet. having the teeth clean is very important ...just thing if you didn't brush your teeth in 10 years what would they look like and how you might feel. Look in the dogs mouth and see if you can see the tarter on the teeth and that might be the infection that he is tending too to treat the dog for the other problem...the starting point might be the dogs mouth....if the breathe is bad that might mean infection.....and the meds will take care of that...call the vet and ask him he will answer all questions. if you are wondering why he started with that med...just watch you dog and make sure that you give the meds as needed and finish it and go back and proceed with the treatment as scheduled.

Hi, we have a golden retriever that is 13 and starting having the same problem. You are looking at a plethera of problems. First the thyroid has taxed the immune system. Second a host of virus's bacteriei, fungi, and mites have been able to take hold. Treating all these at once is difficult. I have managed to bring my golden retriever back for near death using immune enhancers, special food, and external treatments. The harshest is the internal medicine for the fungi and the harshest externally is the mite dip. These 2 things should be done when the dog is at its healthiest. Be careful of the dog licking himself. That will irritate the stomach and could cause other more severe problems. Find out what the cause of the hair loss is first and treat that and give a thistle, vitamim, egg, cream, and coat and skin supplement. The antibiotic is tough on the system. Yogurt can help his digestive track. But sometimes the antibiotic works against the yogurt. A bath with tone soap and then the medicated shampoo helps. We had to shave out dog because of his long hair. This is not an easy fix and it will take you significant time and attention. good luck hope this helps.
Age and genetis is more then likely the reason for the thyroid condition and immune deficiency. Be sure to give the thyroid meds as prescribed. Check with the vet before using any treatments.

I'm sorry but it seems the vet has answered any question as to what's wrong. What are you asking? Thyroid can just decide to go it seems (perhaps based on food quality or even negative reactions to vaccinations) and liver enzymes will go from the same thing. At 10 1/2 she's doing just fine given her age.

the vet will probably put her on thyroid medication which you will have to give 1 to 2 times daily. For her age, I don't think this is uncommon, many dogs and cats have thyroid problems and are on medication for it, and usually do just fine. Just a part of your dog getting older.

Thyroid problems are not uncommon in some dog breeds. If the thyroid is the problem, inexpensive meds can be prescribed and given daily. Hair loss is a common symptom of thyrid problems in dogs. Follow the drections of your vet.

My oldest boxer is on thyroid meds and has been for a couple of years (she also has cancer, but the two are not related). Her symptoms were weight loss and hair loss. The meds are not very expensive at all (6 month supply was less than $10.00) and they are small enough that they can be administered easily.
Good luck to you & your baby!
