Try the site: www.dogage.com - it has some really good suggestions. My boy is also overweight and he's beginning to slim down.
I also discussed this with my vet, who gave me the same suggestions my MD did for my weight loss: less food, more exercise.
Who'da thunk?

The easiest, fastest way to lose weight in a HEALTHY manner is a combination of eating nutritious balanced meals AND exercising. Sorry, you have to do both! Since you do have some exercise equipment at home, you already have a head-start. If you can't get motivated, try playing some energizing music while you use the treadmill.... I lost 15 pounds several months ago by using this method, and it has stayed off. You have to really make a lifestyle change, not just try a temporary quick fix. I also dropped red meat from my diet, use only turkey or seafood.... It has a HUGE impact.

Healthy high protein dry dog food (no filler ie: first ingridient corn) follow recommended feeding instructions on package and take your dog for a walk every day, it benefits both of you. If possible take it to a dog park and let it play around for an hour several times a week.

You need to cut down on the amount you are feeding. Treats should be limited and if treats are given, you should decrease the amount of food in the meals. Your dog should also be taken on frequent long walks or be given some kind of activity where he will get some exercise.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

Less dog food, more often and lots and lots of exercise.
You have to walk your dog to help burn those extra calories!
They have leaner versions of dog food for overweight dogs in better pet stores.
