First of all, Mohammed (PBUH) did not claim, it was revealed to him..
anyway.. what the verse mean that, there are going to be in ones family members that will come in between them and worshiping Allah. Therefore, God was warning Muslims that they will face that from their own family and that should not stop them from worshiping Allah.
This verse was revealed because of a man: Auf Bin Malik Al-Ashjai'i and others like him. See, those people converted to Islam in Makkah and then wanted to go to the prophet to learn more about Islam but members of their families did not allow them and did not want them to go.
See, "enemies" in this verse is related to their actions, they are stopping them from what God ordered them to do..
This is believed to be the work of Satan, Satan either tries to allure people to sin, and if can't he allures those who influence the person to sin.

Btw, the word wives is a bit wrongly interpreted because it refers to both sexes, it should have been spouses.

and in the same verse, God warns those people and asks them to try to forgive those who stand in between God and them..

It was really written that way as an excuse to bang little boys (something chritsians like too) the authors of the kuma sutra when speaking of anal sex mention how they first heard of it from the mohammidians or followers of modern day islam. seems they had a thing for little boys bums. if you need more evidance reseach vlad the impaler seems his hatred of islam was rooted in being kidnapped when a little boy and him and his brother were sodomized by muslim kidnappers hope this helps have a good day

it means that there are people who you love, closest to you that reject the faith in public or secret so caution them. Wealth, children and just about anything else will test your faith and shake it to prove your loyalty to Allah

he probably said it because he knew the muslim faith is unfair to women and was afraid they would someday realise this ( oh how I pray they will)
