That is the instinct to survive and has nothing to do with greed.
I was surprised to hear it said that Greed causes adultery.

It is a satisfying of ones self with out regard for others.
taking more than you need. it is a form of gluttony.

Wanting something is not the same as greed. Wanting without regard for others is greed because it is based on ego. If you're ruled by greed you get much more than you need of something even when others could benefit greatly from it.
If you have a car why do you need another one? If you have ten coats why do you need another? What do you really need? Some food, and a place to sleep. Not all have even this.

Actually, greed is wanting and taking more than you need to survive at the expense of others. Driving a minivan to school with 4 kids is not greed, driving a Hummer with chrome taillight guards and 24-inch rims solo while your 4 kids need new shoes is. Get it?
Sloth is also one of the 7 Sins, yet many would choose to take the easy way out of any situation.
Count all the fat people in church and reminisce about Gluttony.
Remember how Ted Haggard forgot that Lust was bad?
Does Envy cause people to make fools out of themselves on American Idol?
All of the supposed "sins" are the backbone of America now. How sad.

Greed is wanting beyond what is necessary and more than what is deserved.
Greed for knowledge - wanting to know about someone's private life, and then you end up hacking into their mobile phone, breaking into their diary, etc (kinda like Watergate)
Greed is the desire that drives people (religious or not) to steal, to pollute, to declare war... and ultimately to kill.
The seven deadly sins really should be called the seven core motivations for murder.
Reading the bible and history up to Medieval times, a bunch of monks found that all murders had at their origin seven common motives... that's where the theory of seven deadly sins originated.

The Catholic Church preaches against greed, but stops it's priests marrying so that all there estate goes to the Church, or is that hypocrisy.

Greed is no more of a survival instinct than the other six.Having shelter,clothing,and food are for survival.Jesus said"Watch out!Be on your guard against all kinds of greed;a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." After all what good will having to much of anything do you if your dead?

Greed is not good, it is when a person takes more than he needs and just takes what he wants. Humans are the only animals that take more than they need. We killed hundreds of buffalo on hunts and ate part of one. We want more and more money and we are never satisfied. Greed is the reason people die in poverty and starve. People buy more food then they need and throw it out when it expires. And greed for love is how people become stalkers. Greed is crap.
