Compared to what you can make as a lawyer or a business person, they're not very well paid anymore," says Gerard F. Anderson, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Hospital Finance and Management.

This is probably not good. If anybody should be well paid - in absolute terms and compared with people of similar talent and education - it is those who keep us alive and well.

Median compensation for family-practice doctors in 2004 was $156,000, according to the Medical Group Management Association. (Median means half made more and half made less.) This may sound like a lot, but it's probably less than what some junior bank vice presidents and industrial-supply salesmen pocket.

Median pay was $161,000 for pediatricians, $211,000 for neurologists and $222,000 for emergency docs. To earn these amounts, doctors invest years of education and ridiculous working hours when they finally get a license.

In the medical school class of 2005, the average graduate had education debt of $120,000, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. Eighty-five percent owed money.

Anderson's medical students at Hopkins often look wistfully after former classmates who already earn $80,000 or more in Wall Street or law firms while the med students are years from any income, he says.

What with Medicare rules and high medical insurance rates, many would be doctors are saying "No Thanks" to the profession.

Unless you don't care much about money and care extremely much about curing/healing people, you should think twice before entering this profession.

Theres a difference between people that work for the hospital and others that have their own practice. You stand to make alot more money with your own practice but have less job security then say working at a hospital. The entire healthcare system in this country is screwed up so doctors don't usually get as much money as most people believe. You need to consider that most of the other business people and lawyers dont have as great of a job security as doctors and surgeons.

The type of plastic surgery you mentioned you would like to do -- for peole in accidents with mushed up faces and so forth -- is halal. Though none of us should focus so much on body image that we cannot accept some imperfections, people with gross disfigurement face psychological challenges and social challenges that the rest of do not. Remember zakat for low-income who need your help too. And please only agree to do "sexual corrective surgery" when it is truly necessary, such as wth hypospadias, and not to mutilate hermaphrodites because others will not accept them. Others will accept them if those others have been taught right.
