Wear a nice dress or dressy pants outfit. It should be dressy, but should not detract from the bride. You should dress respectfully - not sexy. I have been to so many weddings where women dress as if they are trying to land themselves the next guy to get married. For an indoor wedding, long or short-sleeve shouldn't matter. It depends on where the wedding will take place. If it is at a fancy country club or some very ritzy place, then dress up more. If not, then a dress or dressy pants outfit is perfectly acceptable. DON'T wear black. A wedding is not an occasion for mourning. It's also better not to wear white because that is the bride's color. Anything else should be fine as long as it is in good taste.

Wear either a nice dress, suitable for church on Sunday or for a nice day at work, or a nice blouse & skirt. I don't know where you are, but here it is COLD - so I would probably even wear a nice skirt and nice, pretty, sweater (like a cashmere turtle-neck).

I'm old fashioned in that I think that you should avoid black - especially for an afternoon. You should also avoid white, although a white blouse with a skirt would be okay in a pinch. Just make sure to add splash of color so you don't look "bridal."

You should strike that note so people don't say "Who does she think she is?" but instead "Who is that?" (in a good way ;) )

Time & Money to shop? These types of looks would be very appropriate (an no point to the blue theme -just seems to be a hot color):

In today's world, colors are not quite what they used to be. Once upon a time, black was a taboo color for a wedding because it suggests you are in mourning because of their union. Nowadays, however, winter and evening weddings often have a lot of women wearing black cocktail dresses because they are not sure what else to wear.

Being a little old-school myself, I would suggest a darker color dress, anything from navy to pewter to red, but not black. Personally, I think that weddings are one of very few excuses we have nowadays to get really done up and look smashing, so if I were going to a wedding tonight I would wear red.

Whatever you do, however, don't wear white. Not only is it winter and so only "arctic" white is acceptable, but a guest in white is competing with the bride. Respecting that she is the center of attention is paramount.

NB: Some people might warn you not to outdress the bride for similar reasons - that it's her day - but in my opinion, if you are naturally prettier than she is or if her dress is awful, you can't be held responsible.

PS: Considering that this is an afternoon wedding and not a more formal, evening wedding, have you thought of two different outfits, one for the ceremony and one for the reception? A cute skirt and sweater or crisp trousers would be good for the ceremony and you can change into a more elegant dress for evening. Good luck!

Winter afternoon wedding somewhere non-tropical:

nice dress or skirt suit, subdued color (avoid hot pink, bright melon and red). Also try to avoid ivory, white, winter white, etc.

Sheath dresses and cardigans (dressy) are perfect. You can even wear black, just add an accent color.

I would basically dress as I would for a nice church service.

It's winter so I would suggest a warmer color. Wear a dress and some nice pumps. Something simple and classic. Never wear anything that will take away from the bride. ie: no neon colors or over abundance of pattern.

Since it is at 4pm, then it is probably not a formal wedding, although you should check with you sister-in-law about that to be sure. In any case, don't wear anything white, and don't try to be the most gorgeous woman, or the one who demands all heads to turn tomorrow is the bride's day. Very classic, clean, sophisticated, yet jewelry or something little that makes you pop just that little bit.

Pastels are good. Just match it with your skin tone or you will look washed out.

Call your sister-in-law and ask her what she is wearing. Is it formal being it is held at 4 pm on a Saturday? Have fun!

A nice dress or slacks and a nice blouse. I wouldn't go too overboard, especially because it a pretty far removed person from you. Good luck and have fun!

A nice dress.

DO NOT wear white though.... It is dis-respectful to the bride.

I would say a nice, basic black dress. Nice shoes and jewels too of course. You could throw on a nice jacket to add some color too.
