My school is having its first winter ball this afternoon. They have only given us a week's notice. THe attire is "semi-formal no jeans permitted." Lotsa people are buying floor length/homecoming dresses. I thought semi-formal was like a skirt/dress shirt....

Would it be appropriate for me to go in a nice black skirt and red dress shirt or should I assume I wouldnt fit in with all the sophmores-wearing-prom-dresses and not go?

You'll likely see girls wearing floor length prom gowns but also girls will be wearing shorter dresses and skirts with blouses. Go and have a great time... don't worry about what everyone's wearing... as long as you're comfortable and exude confidence, you'll fit in perfectly.

At a semi-formal ball, you will most likely see a variety of fashions. Some will be very dressy (Long gowns and Tuxedos) while others might be more casual (simple dresses and shirts with no tie.) People vary on comfort levels regarding attire. Some prefer to be in the "over-dressed" category, while others would rather be dressed in something that is closer to everyday wear. I would suggest you dress to your own individual comfort level for the dance. The outfit your described certainly sounds appropriate, and if you like it, then you should be fine.

Not everyone will take it to the extreme. go in your semi-formal attire and if you are really out of place, have a back-up plan and jsut leave... I suspect that it will be a mix of people some really dressed up and others who are how they are supposed to be. There is NO way the guys are all renting tuxs' or suits

those different outfits are too lengthy for some thing except promenade. genuinely bypass with a short gown :) they continually seem lovable at semis. plus they're relaxing to play with (ie, your footwear wont be lined, so get lovable ones... relaxing hair that should not be overshadowed through the gown).

"Semi-formal" really doesn't exist from etiquette's point of view. Anything other than "formal" is "informal". Still, it's clear that what's called for here is whatever your mom would call "decent".
As for "fitting in", don't worry about it.

If it's semi-formal and they are dressing formal, then you will be dressed correctly.

Semiformal is the same as "Sunday best". I think your planned outfit sounds just fine.
