No need to confront if the person is saying things about you. The thing about gossipers is that they gossip about everyone, and generally anybody who hears the gossip will see who it's coming from and they'll make up their own mind. Just continue doing what you're doing and make sure that you don't make the same mistake of gossiping.
If the person is about to gossip to you, you can just say something like, "Hey, we're all friends here. I'd appreciate if you didn't tell me that story." or "I'd rather not hear about that. Let's change the subject."

Gossipers like to hurt you in a cowardly way. Do NOT retaliate using gossip. If possible confront the person with the facts in the presence of people or somebody who has heard the gossiper first hand.

Make them "Discreditable".
In other words ... you start off leaking small gossip to them through friends ... then make the gossip bigger and bigger and bigger ... so the gossiper will realize how insane they are and ppl will roll their eyes when they start to gossip; hence you've discredited the source.

Just tell the person stop spreading gossips about you or else you'll smack her/his face. Or tell them that you'll punch her/his mouth and will end up looking like Angelina "fish lips" Jolie. (although violence is not the best solution).
