I would go see Rent.
Rent is a groundbreaking broadway in that is is a rock opera. The music is amazing, and the story is exciting.
The fact that you HAVE to go see a musical is awesome! Enjoy it!

I'd go with RENT. I like the music and I kinda liked the movie. I didn't know the Color Purple was a Broadway play...I thought all things on Broadway are musicals and I didn't think Color Purple had any kind of music at all.

Living in NYC allows me to go see pretty much everything, and I've seen all your choices.
Avenue Q is silly, crude humor, but some fairly fun songs...you'll end up forgetting it in the long run
The Color Purple is good as far as a musical goes. If you're a fan of the book, then you will enjoy it...if you're a fan of the movie then you should probably skip this one. Locals refer to this show as "Oprahoma!" to show how generic and run-of-the-mill it really kinda is...Oprah shouldn't have produced this, it's unnecessary.
Hairspray is a classic now. You should see this one if you're not a full-time theater fan. It's good for pretty much ANY audience. I have seen it a few times, and it's much better if you can sit closer to the stage because of all the dancing. Sometimes you feel like they're going to jump onto you, but all in all, this one isn't bad.
Rent, well it's amazing yes. But just rent the movie, it's identical for the most part. The few minor tiny things they changed for the film aren't relevant to the plot and you're not missing anything. Check the bonus features for an additional song that they cut out...it's a good one, but again...irrelevant to the outcome and overall substance of the story. Everyone should see RENT once.
http://www.theatermania.com is a fantastic site for discounts. Sign up for a membership, it's free. They just want your email address to send you updates which come about 2 times a week. The discounts are worth it though. I haven't paid more than $40 in years for Orchestra seats through this site.
http://www.broadwaybox.com is another one.
Have fun!

I'd see Avenue Q. Irreverant, original, funny, and definatley NOT politically correct, with catchy songs you'll find yourself singing at inappropriate moments (songs include "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist", "The Internet is for Porn", "You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want (When You're Makin' Love)", and "The More You Ruv Someone" as sung by the Asian character with a heavy accent). Plus the puppets aspect is just too good to pass up; what other show is going to feature Seasame Street style puppets interacting in such adult situations? Hilarious.

Phantom is a classic. Book of Mormon is great but you're only turning 16, who are you going to see it with? It's not a show I would go see with my parents because of content and language. Other shows I would recommend would be Anything Goes it has Sutton Foster who is spectacular and just won the Tony for her role in that show, I have been told How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is entertaining, as well as Catch Me if You Can Which stars Norbert Leo Butz and Aaron Tveit both of whom I particularly enjoy. Sister Act is another one you would probably like, and there's always Wicked since you didn't say you had seen it. Have fun!

If I could only go to one, I'd go to 'Avenue Q.' This is one very hilarious play. It's edgy, racy, and witty. Also, this is one play that would be difficult to travel on tour because of the make up of its cast. I saw it three times in NYC and enjoyed each showing.
'Rent' would be the second one, followed by 'Hairspray' and my last would be 'The Color Purple.'
