I love toanswer this question! Its because of the power of His name. There is no name or expression with equal power.

It's a cultural thing. Because for the most part in the English speaking world, Jesus has been the main deity for several centuries now, it's his name that is going to be used as a cuss word.

If it makes you feel any better, Jesus really isn't is name, just the English translation of it.

Why do they also say S.H.I.T., which stood for

Ship
High
In
Transit

They marked that on ships that would haul manure for fertilizer, which with the water and manure combining could cause methane gas to be released and someone going into the hold with a candle/lantern would find their body parts and the ship blown all over the port.

Do you want to continue on? It is just a term that is commonly used, that is all.

The whole point of swearing is to use words that are taboo.

Christianity is the only religion where it's taboo to use anyone's name in vain. It is not taboo in Buddhism, Islam or Judaism to say Buddha, Mohammed or Moses in vain.

I have never used His name in vain and I never will. I cannot stand how people use it so flippantly nowadays. Even 10-20 years ago you would never hear people speak like that on a regualr basis...now it's completely normal and it's sickening.

English language. Medieval England. Lots of Christianity. Nobody cared about Mohammed or Buddha. Moses is not a deity, so his name would not be profane.

(Lokasenna down there has put it into complete sentences)

Because the term Jesus Christ is equated with divinity. So when people "swear" (such as "God damn it") they have to swear by something that is greater...more divine...than simply in the name of a man.

The World Hates the Disciples
18"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you
