Rancher today have the option of marking their cattle with brands that are cooled with liquid nitrogen, instead of heated red hot. The super cold causes instant frostbite at that point. The hair falls out of the skin and it also bleaches the skin white, so that they resemble brands caused by heat. But, because the intense cold numbs things, the animal feels no pain. It is a more humane way of marking animals.

Nowadays, it is only crazy college students, usually frat members or drunk party-goers who get branded with their Greek initials, or tattooed.

Some are branded, mostly cattle in the western US. Some are tattooed in the ears. Most cattle get ear tags, ranging from one with a number up to Radio Frequency ID tags that have an individual ID number or bar code that can be scanned from several feet away so that the animal can be traced through the food system.
