I'm after something that won't slow everything else down at all. I don't mind paying for it, if not too expensive.

Any suggestions welcomed

First I will say most are probably good, each will have good and bad points, like one may miss a certain virus and another catch it. True some can be a system hog where others reside in the background using less system resources.
I use Antivir; http://www.free-av.com/ it free and seem to do well for me. I do use a free on-line scan as a double check if I suspect something wrong and my Antivir miss it. Panda is OK for this or to buy as it cheap, but, when you buy a virus program then they want you to subscribe and pay for the service, which may be best. Panda is here;

Also, you can read some reviews at PC World to get some insight, go here;

up top find "Reviews" "Software" and browse.

Avast rocks.

This is a professional quality product that you can use for free as a home based user.

It does updates automatically and has great filtering options.

I had one of those awful Trojan Worms some time back and AVAST was the only thing that fixed it due to its boot scan, that bad old worm never had time to restore itself.

Depends on your needs.. I personally like Norton Anti-Virus. Never had a problem with them. So long as you keep the Virus definitions up-to-date. Only problem with that is $$. If you're looking for free. Supposedly AVG has free antivirus software w/free updates. I've never used them.. But, like I said. Depending on your needs.

When I went to buy a new computer last week I asked what the Geek Squad(the people that you call to work on your computer)recommended that I install. They recommended Trend Micro antivirus and Webroot spy ware. So that is what I chose.

i like Symantec antivirus from norton...but the autoprotect may slow down your computer depending on how much ram you have, and how much it needs to protect (i have 2gigs of ram, and symantec doesnt slow me down)...get the corprate edition, although every edition will cost something (unless your getting through your college or work)
a good free antivirus is avast...

in addition to whatever antivirus software you get, download Advance Windows Care:

that will check the things that antiviruses dont, and not only for viruses

I hear what your saying....I find that both Norton and Macfee took way to much resources on my computer. I also found that when I had a virus neither one of those programs found it, but Avenger did...I totally recommend Avenger and it's free!..it's small and takes up virtually little resources.
here is the site for it

these days anti-virus software is so complex and sophisticated, it will more than likey slow down your system, unless is a new computer with an extremely fast processor...

that being said: Norton is the best (IMHO)

I use a top-notch freebie: aVast!

http://www.avast.com

Haven't had a problem in over 4 years. I run Microtend's free on-line scanner periodically to see if aVast! missed any. So far, so good.
