I am healthy female, I have had a sore throat for 6 weeks. It's not a typical sore throat that you need a cough drop. This feels like a lump in my throat, hard to swollow and it feels tight and swollen. This is here all the time, day and night -never eases up. The dr said it was strep at first, antibiotics didn't help, then next dr said it was upper respitory infection gave me a steriod and antibiotic, no relief. I went to ENT who scoped me through the nose down the throat, nothing. Had a barium swallow, nothing. He said I need to see a stomach dr. it might be acid reflux without heartburn. He gave me a prescription for Omeprazole. I haven't taken it because I don't have any stomach problems or acid backing up into my throat. Please help.

I had something very similar to this a couple years ago. It began with an upper respiratory infection accompanied by a bad sore throat. After I was better I was left with an odd lump in my throat that was uncomfortable all the time, especially when I swallowed. I could feel it from the outside as well as when I swallowed anything. My regular doctor thought it was a thyroid problem. I had blood work, a dye-injection test, a CAT Scan on my whole neck and throat area. I was on Protonix for acid reflux, I had an ultrasound on my thyroid. I was sent to an ENT as well. He looked down my throat and couldn't find anything either. He diagnosed me with a swollen lymph node. He said occasionally, after an illness, one of your lymph nodes does not get "the memo" that you are well now and continues to act as though you are still sick. He said there is nothing that can be done for it. I went back to my regular doctor who went over all the tests I had done. All came back negative for any problem. She said to watch the lump and if it got worse to come back, but since none of the tests showed anything they'd go with the swollen lymph node diagnosis for now. About 2 weeks later I came down with strep throat. After I was well from that, I noticed the lump in my throat was gone, so a swollen lymph node ended up being my problem.

I think if a doctor prescribes a medicine you must take it. After all he is a professional. Sore throat is usually due to a viral infection. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. You can find some good home remedies at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html
