Alzheimer's is NOT an "infectious disease", to start off with. My mother had it, and the doctors told me that it was a combination of factors, both genetic and life-style related.
They say to avoid it, you should work on keeping your brain and memory sharp, I do suduku and puzzle games and such to stay sharp.
Also, drinking and drug use contribute to the death of brain cells (which do NOT regenerate - EVER). After I learned this, I pretty much quit drinking myself - I have an occassional glass of wine with dinner.
They're doing a lot of research into the causes and cure for Alzheimer's, and we can only hope that by the time we're "old", they'll have some sort of medicine or something for it.

With the new CT & MRI scans they can actually see Alzheimers effect on the brain, and map its progressive spread. The cause is unknown, but genetics, and some traumatic brain injuries, and multiple strokes seem to play a part. The progress is slow and destrucive, killing off brain cells along with interfering with chemical recepter cells that allow normal responses.Sadly there's no cure nor can the progession be stopped. Many medications have been tried with little or no effect. Its the same with herbs, vitamins and other nutrrient and supplements, they all haved proved useless. You can however make their life easier with things like occupational therapy and gadgets that will help with everyday living.Remaining connected to family and freinds is also a big factor with their emotional needs. There are labs that will do a genetic profile,to ascertain if this is in "the family"etc .Take care SW RNP
