Well for one thing, being called skinny is actually a compliment because it implies you take good care of yourself, and being called fat is an insult. Lots of people can't HELP being fat - they try to diet and lose weight and can't lose it. Growing up, and even in my 20's and 30's, I was very thin - not anorexia thin, but skinny, nonetheless. Kids teased me in elementary school and junior high, calling me bird legs and toothpick legs. Those same girls ended up being fat in high school and after high school, while I had a figure they envied.
Now, I am 45, and I look pretty darned good for someone my age, if I do say so myself (I don't mean to sound conceited), but after 2 kids and getting older, I am finally carrying an extra 10 pounds, and most of it seems to be in my tummy and waist. My clothes fit well and I look trim to most people. Still, I myself feel self-conscious because I was always UNDERWEIGHT and now I have weight I want to lose, and it is difficult for me, no matter how hard I try to eat right and exercise. Imagine how it must feel for a woman who is obese or very overweight. If a skinny person like me feels fat when she gains 10 pounds, how must a very overweight woman feel? It is not socially acceptable in our society to be fat. People frown on that and make fun of that. They judge fat people as lazy, gluttonous and somehow bad. These poor people get stared at, laughed at, mocked and even discriminated against. When they buy airline tickets, they have to buy 2 seats - if they take up 2 seats, that's understandable, but really, airlines should at least offer the 2nd seat at a reduced rate or something.
My point is, it's not an insult to call a guy skinny. It's a compliment. It's not even an insult to call a guy fat because for some reason, it's more socially acceptable for a man to be fat than a woman. How many overweight men have no qualms about sidling up to a woman and trying to pick up on her? He has more confidence that he could attract a woman than an overweight woman has confidence that she could attract a man. If a woman is calling herself "thick", it is her way of trying to maintain some sort of self-confidence and self-esteem because she already KNOWS she is fat and has to deal with the stigma of it.

Your bloggies and I are on the same page Emile, wake up
There was no need to berate me for 2 hours constantly calling me fat, obese, lazy *** at 15lbs overweight... asking me if the floors squeak when i walk across them, accusing me of being in denial, asking me how many bus seats are required for my 'girth' telling me im a stroke and heart attack candidate (vegetarian, never drink, smoke, done drugs, work out daily - and can run around the block fyi) telling me my ideal weight is 110lbs at 5'4... You're nuts, my 11 year old is almost that and she's my height and very fit - with an 11 year olds body! Inappropriate, insensitive, nasty and a stupid waste of time to be talking for 2 hours about 15lbs. Pity the person who spends all his time pointing the finger at everyone else... their appearance, aptitude or any other part of their make up... takes all kinds i guess, the imperfect people like me and the perfect ones like you! lol There is more than one truth and that is perception. Noone decides or dictates the ultimate 1 truth to the whole world as much as you believe YOU DO. As I said, surround yourself with people that are like yourself and leave everyone else alone if you can't accept and be kind. I am a beautiful (inside and out) happy woman and you have no right to try and interfere with my happy flow by being negative especially about something so silly and misguided. Your loss and you will lose many more with the way you behave. I really hope that you don't end up a lonely old man and that you find the 'skinny woman' of your dreams.

It's a matter of personal preference; one guys thick is another guys morbidly overweight. Chances are they're only listening to the guys who think they're thick and are into them. Myself personally I think proportion has a lot to do with it, so I can't put a real number on it, but if they have a nice ... you can see from the front, then it's thick, but if they're fat and it doesn't stand out at all, not so much. A lot of us can't run a block without needing an ambulance, even those of us that are skinny ...

I think that pardigm has shifted.
About 10 years ago, thick meant that a girl had a big butt, big thighs and possibly large boobs, and maybe a little bit of a poochy stomach, but her waist was always smaller than her butt. Now the defintion includes any woman from a few extra pounds to extremely obese.
This is how I feel - there are beautiful chubby, chunky women... they just have it goin'on... and there are beautiful thin women. BUT - there are definitely unatttractive women in both groups.

perhaps when describing ones body, it is nicer to say, 'thick' instead of 'fat'. or 'fat and sassy' it would be rare if someone described themselves as grossly overweight cuz that might make them focus on that subject instead of moving on to another subject such as personality traits or hobbies, etc.

being overweight is not a funny issue.
do you think that most people who are overweight like being that way? if they had a choice do you not think that they would choose to weigh less?
i don't think its necessary to call anyone anything. yes if you are describing a person who held up a bank or committed some other crime it would be appropriate.
how much you weigh DOES NOT define what kind of person you are, making your question rude and unnecessary.

It is called perception. The same way women who are grossly emaciated call themselves slim, petite and sexy.
