If they are climbing out anyway, it's time to promote them to a bed. Netting them in will not teach them how to stay in bed, it will only teach them to be contained. You want them to learn self-control. They won't stay in bed, they won't and there is little you can do. You can empty their room of toys or put the toys into a closet etc at night. Put a gate or a plastic door knob cover on the knob to keep them from having run of the house. Then each and every night, do not leave the room unless they are in bed and tell them to stay there. Did I mention that they won't. They won't, they will immediately get out of bed and run around the room. No matter how boring the room is they will find a way to play and stay awake for awhile but they will climb into bed and go to sleep after awhile (I promise, I really do). If you make sure that the room is totally baby-proofed (covers on the outlets, locked closet or barricaded with no climbing opportunity, etc.) and make sure that they have just the bedding and any necessary lovies (but only one blankie and one stuffed creature each), they should be safe and you have only to wait until they get it. Don't expect them to go to sleep right away,( I'm sure they don't now) and don't expect them not to exercise their newfound freedom but you can teach them to have some responsibility for their own sleep. I have a 4-yr old and a 20-month old. We had to do this twice so I know the fear. Good luck

I saw this a few days ago on a nanny show. The two kids were about a year apart, but I think it pretty much would apply. Get them regular toddler beds. Now when they go to sleep you stay right in their room and every time they get out of bed you don't say anything to them, you don't look in their eyes you just get up and put them back into bed. The person on the show had to do it for like 2 hours the first night...but since it would be their first time in a bed they might take to staying in their beds easier.

The net always scared me b/c of the threat of a fire. If you can't get to their room they stand a better chance at surviving if they can make it out on their own or to a window. My mother did put my youngest brother in his crib with a net over it. Worked like a charm. I have 5 kids myself and I never put the net over the crib. I shut the door and put the door knob "safety thing on it". Worked to keep them in their room at the very least. I'd then check on them every 15-20 minutes til they finally konked out. Then I'd put them in their bed. I took the crib down once they learned to climb out of it and gave them toddler beds. Good luck!
