Ah, yes. Good question, and one much discussed in secondary schools. Is something accidentally beautiful, such as a tree outlined against the sky, art, in a way that someone splodging paint on a piece of paper is seen to be?
The conclusion I have come to is that if someone has created it to be art, it's art. So even little Jimmy's daubings can be art. Likewise, if you take a picture of the tree/sky, that too is art, if you say it is. A photo might be just a photo, or it might be art. If you say it's a photo of a tree, that doesn't make it art, you have to say your picture is a piece of art. Damien Hurst's sheep etc. and Tracy's bed are art because they have created them into an artistic installation. This distinguishes Tracy's bed from any other old bed.
A pot, for example, may or may not be art - if an artisan makes a cooking pot, they probably just see it as a functional piece. However, if I decorate a pot I see it as a piece of art, and so that's what it becomes.
A piece of art is art because the artist says it is.
Despite all this, the appreciation of art is subjective; very much a matter of personal taste. In my humble opinion a work by Rembrandt or Stubbs, or a piece of tapestry or metalwork, which I have no hope of ever being able to copy, has very much more artistic worth than a sheep in formaldehyde or an unmade bed.
Art to me also has to be stimulating, preferably pleasurable - to describe something as 'artistic' still seems to suggest that skill and imagination are involved.

Simple question ,charlotte e, right? Deserves a simple straightforward answer. Art is enlightening. Art is anything pointed out or created by another person to inform, to encourage one to see life or a part of life in a new way. A way which one may not have notice without the art. Art is communication. If that communication doesn't happen then the thing fails to be art. Simple as I can put it.

Art is way of looking at the world. Artist perception. It is a way looking on life bringing wisdom, inter peace & self therapy, and expressing prodly, who you are. Art is developing new concepts never seen before and proving it! Art is a political rebelion!
Everyone has a degree of artistic perception but in defferent proportions.
I like Art, do you?

My answer is less elaborate than the others here on the whole, but this is the one that I use. It removes all the subjective taste and fashion issues; even the skills issues. Art is what artists do. Artists make art.

Art is entirely subjective although usually it a creation solely for aesthetic pleasure, without any use. So a painting, or a statue, or something like that ... has no use but looks nice.
It's entirely subjective - who is to say that Henry Moore's statues are art? Some say they are magnificent whereas to me they are ugly. A 3-year old's crayon drawing is as much a piece of art as a Picasso or a Turner painting. It's all in the eye of the beholder!
There, has my little essay helped at all?

A way of lying to tell the truth, that film about a high school student said that. Forgotten the name of it, thought the film was terrible. But anyway, art is a bizzare way of telling a story. It can also be a physical expression of an emotion for one person and a load of rubbish to abother.
