YES you need your passport to leave and enter any port in the UK. - that's what the big fuss is between Britain and the rest of the EU...

But to travel between most countries in Europe you don't need a passport...

So, take your passport, even if you manage to leave Britain without it, you'll need it if the Police ask you for id, and to get back into the UK.

Happy trails

You need a full passport. Here's the official gumph:

"Although the United Kingdom is part of the European Union (EU), you still need to carry a full British 10-year passport (or five-year child passport if you are under 16 and not on a parent’s passport) every time you travel to Europe. This includes day trips and travel by Eurostar.

Many countries no longer check passports at their land borders, but they still expect visitors to be able to produce a valid form of identification. For UK travellers this is the British passport. Remember, your passport will have to be checked at immigration control when you return to the UK. "

It would be a good idea to take your passport anyways because if something happens you may need it. I'm not sure if France is part of the EU, but if you are traveling from somewhere within the EU I don't think you need a passport.

Yes you definitely need a passport. A few years ago you used to be able to get a visitors pass but this is no longer the case unfortunately. Sorry to be the bearer of this news. Enjoy your day trip!

In theory No... but it is the internationally recognised identity document. It will take 3 weeks to process through the Passport office so just go get one and you will be sorted for 10 years. And you can get those pretty visa stickers when you go to somewhere exotic

This would depend on your nationality and how you are travelling.
Obviously a German could slip across the border for 24 hours unchallenged.
Most airlines require a passport for identification.

Of course, you will need a passport if you are from abroad. In addition you will need a visa. Don't forget it otherwise you may be stuck at the airport.
