If you mean events special to VIETNAM and not just the Vietnam War, then perhaps my list of events will more relevant to your question than the responses so far.

The single most important event in Vietnam is Tet. Us Westerners probably know this better as Chinese New Year. Tet to the Vietnamese is like Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July wrapped into one holiday to us. The whole country pretty much shuts down for a week while families get together for a series of rituals for Tet. Some of the rituals are resolving outstanding debts from the previous year and paying respect to ancestors. Although it is a holiday rather than a historic event, Tet has been celebrated by the Vietnamese throughout their written history.

Another important event is Reunification Day, which is April 30th, 1975. This marks the end of the Vietnam War and the day the North and South Vietnam were reunited. Depending on which part of the country you are from, Reunification Day is either a great event or a bad memory that is relived every year as a national holiday.

An important event for some Vietnamese is September 2, 1945, which is the day the Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam's independence. This, however, was short lived as the French War started shortly after.

Happy Tet!

There were several significant events during Vietnam. Prior to US involvement, the French were defeated in what was then French Indo-China at the battle of Dien Bien Phu. Once the US was involved, the first major engagement involving air cavalry was in the Ia Drang Valley (see 'We Were Soldiers'). Then, in 1968, there was the Tet Offensive in which the VC was virtually annihilated in the South but won the battle because of media coverage of US casualties turned public opinion back home. Then the fall of Saigon got worldwide press coverage with several famous shots of people evacuating from the US embassy roof.
