To use the upgrade version you will need to use Microsoft's vista upgrade advisor. This will tell you what needs to be done in order to upgrade to vista, like which version of vista is best for your system(home basic, home premium, etc) and make recommendations like removing programs etc.The full version will wipe out your hard drive, then it will install the complete version of vista. The best thing to do after doing either one is go to windows update to get the latest updated files for your version. If you have some favorite programs you will need to got to where you got them to get them back after using the full version or save them to CD and install them after you complete your upgrade. The best advice, wait awhile until the bugs, kinks and other start up problems are addressed.
