I have a 13 year old dachshund male who apparently barks the whole time he is alone. I do not think that it's anxiety, since he doesn't show any other signs, but I believe he does it out of protection. As a goodbye thing, my family would tell him to "bark at the bad people", and I'm wonering if he truly understood! How should I keep him from barking, it's become more serious now because I just moved into an apartment, and recieved complaints. Help Please!!!

I have already tried leaving the t.v. on, and it didn't work.

Thanks everyone, you've all been a big help, and I think I've got the right solution. Before any of us leaves, we shut the bedroom doors so he can't look out the windows, and leave the television on. And if we're going to be a long time, we give him one of those toys that you put food in to keep him occupied. We haven't heard any more complaints, so I'm pretty sure this is doing the trick!

your dog is allready 13 you are not going to retrain it now. I would have to suggest at this time doggy day care. Or take it back to your mom and dad.
Your neighbors have the right to press charges if you do not take action

Unless he was trained to actually bark at the command "bark at the bad people" he wouldn't understand what that meant. Don't don't speak English as a native language and would have to be trained as to the meaning of each word.
It's possible that he is barking out of boredom. Try giving him toys that will keep his mind occupied, like a Buster cube or similar item (these dispense food if they are turned the right way).
You might want to consider getting his eyes checked as well. If he's 13 years old, he could be going blind and gets insecure when there is no sound around to help him orient himself in the apartment. If this is the case, perhaps leave on a radio while you're gone.

I dont' think you can stop him from barking hes too old to stop probably. yes hes barking because he is alone and doens't like it and thinks you will let him out. there isn't much you can do but i think take the dog home and get a smaller dog which will be quiet if you can find one cause pups need alot of care at first and its then you can teach them.

There are dog toys that you can insert dog treats in them. They will keep chewing on them trying to get to the treats and it keeps them occupied. Have you tried the crate train him? Try putting him in one at night next to where you sleep with a blanket over the crate. They feel it's their den and eventually feel safe in it. When you leave your apt put him in there with his treat toy and some nice fluffy towels. After a while it should help. Good luck!

Buy him what's called " a no bark muzzle"! Check your local pet store, this will not hurt him either!

YOU CAN'T. Even if you get it training, it will still bark when you are gone. It is protecting it's home!
