Get black coloring. It's not the kind that you get at the grocery store in the bottles - it's a paste that professional candy makers and bakers use. I know you can get it at Michaels and Hobby Lobby - any place that sells cake decorating supplies.

You will want to start with chocolate frosting, that way it already has a darker tint and it will be easier to turn black. Then use a black cake food coloring and just keep mixing it in until it is the black you want it. It does take a lot of food coloring to get a deep black. A lot of food coloring will not hurt the frosting, just make sure you only use POWDERED food coloring.

You have to buy edible black dye from a cake decorating store. The craft store Michaels sells Wilton tints in a pot, but I prefer the squeezable type from a pro store because it is easier to use. It will take A LOT of the dye and will still look dark grey. Once the frosting sets (I usually do cakes the day before), it will darken.

Yep, you can try black food coloring or you can also use dark chocolate ganache as frosting, it's lighter than butter cream, you'll most likely get a better looking cake, but you just won't be able to shape it around if you want to do that.

Most cake decorating places sell the paste, it is a thicker pigment than the drops, you need it for black, it takes time, don't get the dye on your fingers, it stains
if you only need a little bit (ie for writing a name etc) you can buy tubes of precoloured gels in the same dept.
