I ask this because I got a response some time ago (by a Muslim) indicating it exists, but he was not about to go into explaining it because it had nothing to do with my question. (My question wasn't about any type of jihad at all).
Very curious because I've never heard the term used before or since.

The word jihad only means struggle, not holy war. A minor jihad is when you are having a personal battle and yes you will stay alive. A personal battle oh let us say about grades in school, your brother or sister are being pests, you want to get a promotion, yet you are not sure of how to approach your boss.

minor jihad is another type of jihad. the all-known jihad is the one where a muslim dies, standing up for Islam or his country. minor jihad is the one that can be done in everyday life. for example, studying. knowledge is very, very important in islam. another example is fighting ur temptations; not to do bad things, such as break the rules, say rude things, etc.
studying is considered as jihad because learning is a struggle. u have to fight temptations to skip classes, to fool around in the class, chat with ur classmates (not paying attention), etc. oh, and not to mention the homeworks, assignments, presentations, researches blah3..
basically, jihad is sort of struggling. if a muslim struggles and fights for islam, it's jihad. (physically or not). either way, islam doesnt promote violence. if u know about the 'fathul mekkah' (the opening of Mekkah), u'll realise that islam actually opposes violence. yeah its sad a lot of people dont know that, really.
i know i didnt elaborate well. english isnt my first language so im not very good at explaining islamic stuff in english. that's the best i can do. sorry for grammatical mistakes or anything.

it ranges from fighting your desires and the devil to fighting the transgressers on islamic lands.
