she has lost 3 stone since September, 2 stone of that has come off since the end of November, when she started a Total Food Replacement diet, she has now confided in me that she has been eating for the past 2 weeks but has been making herself sick afterwards, she is 15st 5lbs now and has been told by her pharmascist that she should weigh 10st 10lbs to be a healthy weight for her height. she is going away in march and seems determind to lose as much as possible, but surely she will make herself ill by making herself sick? she is having 2 of the 3 required shakes for her TFR diet and is not throwing those up, just solid foods which she isn't supposed to have while doing this diet.

what can i do to help her? the shakes give her all the vitamins and minerals she needs, but the vomiting could still make her ill couldn't it?

Yes she is bulimic and she has confided in you but it is up to her to get help / admit she has a problem. All you can do is encourage her to share what she has told you with either her GP or a dietician who will be able to tell her the dangers of continually forcing herself to be sick. You are a good friend to worry but it is her body and she is probably going to keep doing it as she obviously sees an immediate difference and will be getting a buzz from losing weight. You could suggest she goes to her GP as it can be detrimental to your health to have any sudden dietary changes and she should just get checked out or get some info for her on bulimia. She has to admit she has a problem first before she will consider getting help.

Yes you are right, the vomiting will eventually make her stomach muscles restrict automatically, it will be hard for her to keep food down. The acid and bile that the body prepares itself for when someone is vomiting result in acid burns to tissues and muscles. She would need to be vomiting for a very long time for this happen though. I personally do not believe in the diet she is on, its drastic for someone who eats a lot and loves their food. She clearly is looking for rapid weight loss, instead of taking it slowly and re establishing a healthy eating plan with plenty of exercise. These diets do not work, just proves that, as she cant be without food. (none of us can). Try and talk her into taking things more slowly. Wish her lots of luck.

It's best to nip it in the bud early,it will become a cycle for her,
she eats food, she feels guilty so she throws up and with the weight falling off she will continue to do this because it feels good to be thin.
You will hear her say that when she has lost the weight that she will stop and eat normally ,but she won't stop, that's the way people with bulimia are ,they cant help themselves.
Get your friend some info about bulimia and its effects, show her that you care and are there for her.
There is no 'cure' for bulimia, once you get committed to this you are in it for the long haul , and people with bulimia are not easily persuaded.

your friend probably needs more help than you can give her. problems like this are usually emotionally based, not about food or diet-the food and body thing is simply a symptom. she has to make a decision to get better on her own and it doesnt sound liek she's at that stage. She needs to realise this is an illness and also that you will be there for her no matter what. she's going to need all the support she can get.

All Dieting is wrong and unhealthy, when are people going to learn that a balanced diet and plenty of exericise is the only thing you need and should be doing! 15St isn't that heavy compared to some. but all is needed is for your friend to go to the gym a few times a week and to eat healthilly, a chocolate bar is healthy, "in moderation"

i think she might have bulimia. you need to suggest to her that she stop this diet, it isnt really good to do these diets as they dont give the fibre etc that she needs. how much did she weigh before and how much does she weigh now. i think that you should try and help her. good luck
