It feels like the nerves in my fingertips come to life each time I clip my nails.

Does anyone else have this? If so, what do you do about it?

You could be cutting your nails too short.

The only other exception would be if this is a first time and unusual event - in which case I would suggest examining what your fingers or hands have been exposed too.

Many years ago - I worked at a place where they extracted the silver and mercury from old discarded X-rays. My gloves got holes in the fingers from the x-ray crates and my fingers became extremely tender. I could not even stand to put my hands in my pockets to get change.

After a few days my fingernails turned a funny color and still painful. A few days after that they turned black. It seems the mercury made blisters under my fingernails and they burst. The doctor had to drill holes in all my fingernails to bleed the contamination out - and YES it hurt with ungodly amounts of pain.

Hopefully yours is simply cutting your nails too short. If the pain persists or gets worse over the next couple of days - go see a doctor.

If on the outside chance you were exposed to mercury or silver - Go see a doctor now. I suppose some other chemicals could have the same results so think about anything *new* (a chemical or fluid) that your hands came in contact with.

You may be cutting back too far.

Victor ious deserves the 10 points for that agonising story. Ouch, drilling into all your fingernails it must of felt like an inquisition was being performed on you.

You might be cutting to the 'quick'. Look at your nails, you'll see the natural curve of the nail-bed, don't cut all the way down. Or better yet, don't trim your nails past the tips of your fingers.
