While the Zoloft website (www.Zoloft.com) says that taking zoloft is not associated with weight gain, most doctors agree that it can be a side affect.

Since Zoloft doesn't increase appetite, my personal guess is that weight gain can happen for people who weren't eating due to anxiety or depression. Once they feel better, they return to eating normally. I haven't read anything about Zoloft decreasing metabolic rate.

If you are concerned about it, there is a new SSRI medication called Lexapro that is supposed to have fewer side affects than Zoloft, such as not as much weight gain. It isn't as widely prescribed because it is expensive and not in generic form yet, but if you have good insurance, it may be an option.

Either way, if it is you on this medication, don't stop taking it because of weight gain. A little weight gain is better than depression and/or anxiety. Talk to your doctor about a weight loss program. Good luck!
