I currently have a Toshiba laptop with Windows XP media edition, and i'm going to upgrade to Windows Vista Home edition. My question is, will my applications be saved if i download a different operating system or do i need to use a back up device ( flash drive, external c: drive) just incase ?

Yes. Even if you do a clan install it will move all your old windows files to a new folder called Windows.Old in there is all of your old things.

You can also run the upgrade (which I do not recommend). And it will keep all of your files and folders in place.

while installing vista u will have an option to upgrade or the newer installation, select the other one which is upgrade by doing this u will get two os one is win xp and other is win vista. this screen will appear every time u on the computer . by doing this the applications on the xp will not be changed.but going in vista u cant run some programs installed in xp. for that u have to install again in vista.

Anytime I do an upgrade and I do many , I always have a back up or have the individual discs(anti-virus etc) since you mentioned apps.I save all my personal stuff to disc because you never know if you will have to reformat the drive on your pc to accommodate the change. reformatting wipes the drive clean.

Good luck and hope you enjoy your new OS.

In theory they will be there but given Microsoft's history on problems upgrades I STRONGLY recommend backing up anything that's important to you first.

All your applications will not be in vista and all data will be lost.
