Glass breaks and is heavy, ergo plastic is "preferred". Even though standardized glass bottles could be cleaned and reused and be much better for the environment. In fact, in Canada that is what happens to beer bottles. They aren't "recycled" they are cleaned and reused.

Also, in Canada (well some parts) milk comes in cardboard cartons, and plastic bags. Not plastic jugs.

We went to plastic so we could lay off bottle washers to save a buck. You probably are trying to say that chemicals from the plastic get into the milk aren't you?

People stopped getting it delivered because if the milkman was late there was not always somebody at home to take it in as soon as it arrived and on occasion it could be left sitting out all day. Milk sitting out all day is NOT a good thing! The discontinuation of milk delivery pretty much coincided with the time when it became common for women to continue working after marriage and kids. It wasn't because of cost factors but because nobody was home to take it in! It's making a comeback though, as there are now cheap insulated storage options that are effective at keeping milk cold for up to six hours at a time. We get ice cream delivered to our home once a fortnight, my mother orders ALL her groceries online and has them delivered to her door. It's only more expensive if you buy most things generic brand.

glass was phased out due to the cost, amount of glass that would be needed to keep up and lack of recycling of the glass.

if we still had glass bottles on milk, instead of $2.99 a gallon, it would be more like $5.99 a gallon...just to pay for the glass.

Plus imagine all the broken milk jugs, hurt and cut hands, etc. 1 plastic jug takes a lot less energy to create than 1 glass jug.

Stores don't want to handle empty bottles. You can't find glass soda bottles either.
