Low cost regional rail service is available via New Jersey Transit. Also, SEPTA connects New Jersey with PA and DE to the south. Amtrak services NJ but is much ore costly.

Your first stop should be New Jersey Transit (see link below) but beyond that, you should also check:

PATH (http://www.panynj.gov/path/ )
and
AMTRACK (http://www.amtrak.com/ )

That should just about cover you across the entire state.
