I closed a dialog box for wireless network search, as it was not responding and my start button ans taskbar vanished? I've tried rebooting, and i've held the mouse at the very bottom of the screen incase it was draged away, but it just doesn't come up at all. the start key on the keyboard is also not working. Anyone got any sugestions on how to get it back?

Try to boot your XP in safe mode. You should run spyware removal tool, virus check, and disk error checking. You need to search a file named "SHELL32.DLL" in your "\Windows\System32\" folder and make sure this file not damaged or deleted by accident.

If everything is normal, try to reboot in normal mode.

Although the post is old, I'm adding this because I've had the same problem for the past two to three years, and I'm still looking for the cause. At seemingly random times, perhaps once or twice per month, my Win XP Start Bar color goes from its normal (blue) to a pale grey. I've learned that after the color change has occurred, the shared directories on my HDD can no longer be seen by others on my network even though I can access the Internet through my LAN. In every case, the problem is cured by completely rebooting the computer. I can ignore the esthetics of the color change, but my office staff needs access to the files, and so I interrupt my work to reboot. Suggests as to cause and fix will be welcomed.

Hi. That doesn't sound good. Try moving your cursor to each edge of the screen in case the taskbar was put there in 'auto-hide' mode. If not, try booting from the installation CD. Also try a system restore in safe mode. (F8 during boot.)

Yeah this happens a lot and scares people. Hit alt+ctrl+del, go to the File menu and click New Task (Run). When that pops up type explorer.exe and hit enter. Should fix it.
