well truthfully, the thumb & the pinky u refer to being small finger, are NOT fingers, however the difference between them would be the 3 middle fingers inbetween, why the 3 in the middle are longer then the thumb & the pinky,

The little finger can only bend in one dirrection. The thumb has an orbital socket and can move in many dirrections. Try to do things with your little finger that you do with your thumb and you'll immediately know the difference,.

try to hold thing without ur thumb,
then try to hold it without ur small finger.
u also need thumb when holding a pen.
