the big question!

I'm pretty much a regular Joe, not rich, not broke, with a decent job in the IT industry. How much cash should I splash?

Generally it's 2 -3 months salary. You can get a really nice ring for around $2,500

two months salary. the amount is not important. but you may need to educate yourself a little about diamonds. avoid mall /chain type jewelry stores. look for diamonds that are certified. Basically, that means there are certain standards that are met within the diamonds characteristics. Doing this insures that the purchase you make is a true 'investment'. Diamonds that are not certified, are hardly worth anything (financially speaking) You should receive appraisal papers telling the 'worth' of the stone.
Also, consider shopping for a loose, previously owned stone and have it mounted in a setting of your choice. I got a great deal this way on a emerald cut diamond. If the fact that the stone was previously owned bothers your girl, then maybe you should continue shopping around...for girls that is. Anyway, she should be pleased that you are trying to get 'the best' for her.
Any reputable jeweler will be happy to explain all of this to you and in the end, you will feel much better about you purchase and investment. No matter how much you spend, It's a lot of money for a little rock, so be smart about it.

First of all, hopefully it's not the biggest question!
Don't listen to the amounts people bandy about regarding how many months' salary you should spend; that's propaganda from the diamond merchants only.
Only spend what you can comfortably afford; don't go into debt over a ring. You can get nice gold rings starting at 200 and up. The average with a decent diamond is probably around 800.
A mature woman who loves you knows the ring is symbolic - what she wants is the promise and the date set. Congrats in advance and good luck!

I just read an article today about the slavery surrounding the diamond mines in Sierra Leone, I have never liked diamonds and this article just goes to show the blood shed and horrendous conditions that slave children live in, just to produce shiny trinkets for us. The cost of the ring is not important, spend what you can afford, but do not go into debt for it. I would do some research into the diamond thing, it's really appalling, I am sure if people were more aware of what actually goes on then I don't think diamonds would be so popular.

Traditionally it is 2 months salary. First buy a PLATINUM diamond ring. Platinum is a better more rare metal than gold or white gold. If you want to save money buy a wedding SET. That means you get an engagement ring AND a wedding ring for one price. They are clipped together. Ask a jeweler for a platinum diamond ring wedding set. And choose which one you think she would like. Then unclip the rings and give her just the engagement ring and tell her that you already have the wedding ring, that you will give her later.

The 'old school' rule of thumb was two to three month's salary.

Today, it's not such a set number, as many couples today decide together on a ring, and already have financial ties, such as from living together.

On the side, an nbc report last year, asking women on the street, when it came to the rock, most overwhelmingly said it was all about size, 1 to 11/4 carat being most generally accepted as best, and not so much about quality of the stone...

Congradulations, and good luck!

No less than 1,000. I would say between 1,000-2,000 Would be perfect. You can also find really good deals so if you could get a 15,000 dollar ring for less than 1,000 thats fine.
Its said that two to three month worth of your salary is what the man should pay on the ring. But I think that at times thats a bit too much.

My ring was only $2000 and it's beautiful..white gold (betten than platium no matter what anyone tells you) a singe 1/2 carat rock with a band with four diamond chips on both sides. It was found at Shaw's. I've heard no complaints and I love it and my fiance's not rich.If it cost over $2000 look else where.

Whatever you can afford your woman will like it because it came from your heart. You dont have to buy her some really expensive ring, an inexpensive one will have the same effect on her when you surprise her with it. Not everything is about money.
