dyscalculia is a condition that i suffer from. dyslexia is similar.
calcula refers to math and spatial imagining. the person will have trouble great troubles learning to memorize times tables , fractions , and more advanced math. most often the person will be able to add or subtract well and use this to compensate for the lack of the times tables.
the person will have a terrible time gettting around learning routes to and from places. when younger the child may have huge problems in a large school remember how to get from class A to G . the other children will be able to read or understand a diagram or map to and then quickly remember how to get to the different rooms . this will not be the case with this child. As he grows up and learns to drive getting lost will be like a curse. even learning the route to work and back can take sometime.
The person will have an extrodinary ability to remember things like it was a photo. this person will think it pictures much more then others.
some symtoms of dsylexia may be seen slower reading not lack of reading just slower. spelling much the same .
i can recomend some things that will change this childs live. i beg you to insure that the parent do what i suggest. First spend a resonalbe normal amount of time attmepting to teach times tables. After that normal amount of time passes accept that the wont happen . Move on teach adding and subtracting based on tens so 6 times 6 would not be memorized but quickly worked out each time with additon and subtraction. then get that child a calculator and regardless of what a school says make the child able to use it at all times. start early on teaching the relation of time and positon of the sun so he may learn east and west north and south . next gobal postioning satalight units that use voice guidance helps beyound discription. at school in buildings find a way to have some one very discreatly help this child find the various rooms lockers and such. Another thing is remember that charts showing that on day 1and 3 you go to this lot of classes and 2and 4 this other lot and day five some other thing happens beware of that you may as well speak gibberous to the child with that bit so you may just each month write it all out day by day on the 1st of june you go to gym math history and english classes. . then again write out how he gets to his locker from the main door to the first class then the next and so on . do this for each day . time consumming for the parent yes . horror for the child . left and right are hard think of fast even now i have to think left then right then make the turn. just accept that.
understand that this child is under stress that is incomprehensible for others . treat the stress this could mean
meditation fun play time and may inculde medication such as benzodiazpam. never under estimate the stress. the child is not
unaware of how he is seen by others and this will hurt him for life. at 43 even though i had many great friends and went to lots of parties and such in school i had nightmares about it until i was in my mid 30's please make the parents very aware of this.
to make it much better for the person imagine you are being forced to me a great portrait artist all your life every day and night someone says you can do it lets practise or i have a new way to show you and on and on . yet you are not in the least bit an artist and cant even draw stick people well how would you feel if this forcing you to learn art kept up despite you saying in every way possible you cant do it. imagine that . you are either an painter or your not . i dont mean abstrart art i mean portrait art that can be compared easily to the real things . that becomes hell on earth
so dont do that . once a resonable amount of time has been spent on teaching a lesson or skill find a way to work around it over it or under it . later months or even years brief attempts to go back and try again some slightly different way to learn that is ok but again stop when the pain is too great because that is what it is pain. i have had many broken bones and i can tell you i would rather break a bone a month then have this problem and i know of no one that would not make that trade so please do what i have suggested and work over under around beside the blockage when the person has shown enough and enough is something he will be able to tell you . dont torture a child this is what some fools in education are doing if bob hasnt learned to tie his shoes by grade 2 get velcroe straps shoes or slip ons ok get it . thank you . oh i dont spell well and spell check did not work on this one sorry

Do you mean dyscalculia? If so here is some info.

Dyscalculia presents as a number of different types, each involving a specific type of problem in solving mathematical tasks. It corresponds in mathematics performance to dyslexia in the area of reading. The majority of children and adults with dyscalculia have it in a pure form in which both the ability to read and the ability to understand what is read are unaffected, although about 20–30 % with dyscalculia have a mixed form of it characterized by having difficulties both with reading and with math. They often require a long time to carry out even simple arithmetic tasks. They count on their fingers until far into the upper grades. Difficulties of this sort are termed automatization difficulties.
Children and adults with dyscalculia tend nevertheless to be of normal intelligence, but often present an uneven picture in their results on intelligence tests. Their problems reflect, not emotional problems but difficulties in connection with certain specific types of thought processes.

I recommend that you discuss your concerns with your child's physician; he/she could help answer any questions you might have. There are different types of screenings that can be done to see if she does have this problem. If she does have this problem be sure to get in touch with her school as they can set up a program that will especially address her needs.

I tried searching for "dyscalCLIA" but could only find "dyscalCULIA - Impairment of the ability to solve mathematical problems, usually resulting from brain dysfunction."

you can't actually develop a learning disability--but you could have side affects that make it seem like it-- the medication might be too strong and making it more difficult for you to focus
