I prefer the better quality
Try www.bluenile.com that is where my fiance got my ring. He got to pick out the setting, stone, and cut. It has very good quality and he got it for a very reasonable price.
I love my ring and people always remake on how clear it is because the of the color and clearity.

I got married in October. Seems to me I was in a similar predicament as you are now in. When I am in the market for something so important as a house, car or diamond I am very adament about learning about the product and being an informed consumer. If there is anything I learned, and I checked every type of jeweler, it was that there is nothing more important then the quality of the diamond. The least important is the carat.
You will learn about the 4 C's color/clarity/cut/carat
SI1-VS2 is a safe and somewhat affordable clarity
and the color should be I/J.
I to was worried about the size of the Carat but soon found out how much it really didn't matter when she showed off her ring and I constantly heard how much it shined.
Hope this helps, Good Luck.

It isnt the size of the diamond that counts as much as the QUALITY. You want a good clarity and cut and grade. Read online what each mean.
Also buy her a PLATINUM diamond engagement ring because if you get her anything but platinum she will be upset, if she comes from a wealthy family. Her family knows quality so you want quality.
Size of the diamond is NOT the main factor. Search online for diamond and grade and color and clarity. You want an almost flawless diamond, with a white color (cheaper diamonds are yellowish), and a high grade.
Also make sure you know which she prefers: round diamond or princess (square) diamond. Most women nowadays prefer the princess cut.

Clarity is a big deal. Some diamonds can be very big, but have visible flaws. What you should do is find a diamond that is a compromise: perhaps not the largest stone that you could possibly afford, but not necessarily the perfect clarity, either.
People who are braggarts talk about the size of the diamond, but a diamond of lower quality can look really beautiful at first, but doesn't always look well as time has passed.

I think it's a matter of personal taste. For me, my ring is only half a carat (princess cut) but it has a high clarity and is nearly colorless and as a result has a beautiful sparkle. Try to find a nice compromise between size and quality and don't worry about your fiancee's family. They are not the ones that you are proposing marriage too. Good luck!

You should take a hint by how your fiancee is. Does she tend to buy one expensive thing, or twenty cheap things (think shoes, purses, etc.). Does she wear flashy jewelery?
I personally feel that the three C's (cut, clarity, color) are much, much, much more important than the size. Plus, the bigger the diamond, the easier it is to see the flaws. If you're going to go big, at least make sure that the clarity is good so that you don't see huge dark spots in her ring.

Better quality for whatever price you can afford - don't go broke and don't go into debt over a ring. A mature woman will realize the ring is symbolic, and doesn't worry about size.
If it's about size, go for the biggest CZ you can find - very few people could tell the difference! However, if you want something that will appreciate with time, or is just plain classy and beautiful, go for a simple diamond on a yellow gold band -either a solitaire, or one with smaller shoulder stones. Don't follow the fads...
Good luck!

a good quality diamond is a lot better than a big, flawed one. There's a trend lately you might want to explore, a lot of men are not giving exactly diamonds as engagement rings, but other precious stones as well, which might give you chance to buy something bigger, but being a woman who does know about jewelery, i'd advise you to go for a smaller, better quality stone.

Girls want bigger carats... Women want clarity and color. There is no used in having 2 carats, if it is visibly flawed and doesn't shine.
