how do i play avi files/video downloaded from limewire.media player wont and quick time dont seem to work.?

I would go with vlc http://www.videolan.org its free and handles any file I have thrown at it. It may not look nice but it works perfectly

VLC media player can play avi files and it's free

Search the net for and Download and install the K-Lite codec pack, windows media player will play the movie.
