You have been given some wrong info here, if you live in the US it is illegal to have any native bird in your possession. There is a law called the Migratory Bird Treaty Act that does not allow this. Believe it or not...it is even illegal to have a native birds feathers in your possession, let alone a live bird! The only baby bird you can raise legally in the US would be the European Starling, or the House Sparrow since they are both introduced and non-native. If you want to raise baby birds, why not look into working at a local wildlife rehab in your area. They always take volunteers. That way you will be able to take care of them adequately and give them the right diet, and they will survive. And you will be legal!!

It's illegal to raise a wild bird that is a native bird. You need to have special training and a licence. How could you have said you have done it but then say you were not successful? That does not make sence. If you were not successful then you didn't raise it. Raising baby birds is a 24/7 job and the diet is special. You cannot leave a baby bird without food for more then an hour or two.

It is fine to raise the bird if it had been kicked out of the nest or like some birds I had got ran over by farm machinery (they were to little to get actually ran over but could no longer live in the field safely).
I think a wild critter is a wild critter. I have raised several old enough to be on there own (I set them free). I never put them around my own parrot or the parakeets. I never touch them without a glove and I do not get attached. I did get hurt illegal birds, which I took to the wildlife place.
If you want to pursue this type of thing get in touch with the wild life place and volunteer your time. Otherwise you are not doing the wild birds any good keeping them as pets. Like you said they die on you.....
Robins, finches, game birds such as pheasant, quail are not illegal. Hawks, eagles, owls, seagulls, condors, I am told by the wildlife places are illegal and want them immediately if you find a young or hurt one.

I have raised many wild baby birds with great success! Contact your local vet, they get many babies that have fallen out of the nest. Tell him your interest. I'm sure he will call you if he gets one. I fed mine canned dog food. Rolled like a worm. No need for water, they get this from the food. Keep it refridgerated, it's easier to roll. After raising it, and when it's able to fly, be prepared for continous visits for awhile. They always come back to eat. Continue feeding it as you did. Eventually it will settle into the wild and will not return. This is the saddest time because you don't know if they are OK. But the good feeling you get when they do fly away is awsome!!!!

It is illegal to raise wild birds with out a permit. From your lack of success, I'm sure you can tell why.
Find a licensed wild life rehabilitator in your area and volunteer there. Many nature centers, Audubon centers, and places like that have a licensed wild life rehabilitator on staff.

It depends where you live, in the Uk most wild birds are protected and it is totally illigal to take a bird from the wild for your own gain. However in The US it is legal to take certain species in certain states but you need a licence in order to do so. I wouldn't suggest you just go out and find a baby bird to look after. find someone who already has a licence to wild take birds and ask them for a bit of advice.
