There is an "unspoken rule" about dating ex's. I would talk to you friend before you do anything. If you jump in and start dating the ex she could get angry regardless of whether or not shes over him. Girls can be catty... we want what we can't have. Its a very sensitive subject so I would watch out.
I speak from experience. I had a friend go out with my ex... theres always that thought of "how long has that been going on". As dumb as it sounds.. I felt betrayed by both of them (Then again I as much younger and things like that were Earth shattering).
I have also taken a friends ex.... but the never really dated and he ended it with her cause he had feelings for someone else...me. I don't regret it cause i'm still with him and hes been the world to me. So if I would have passed it by cause of my friend (That I don't even talk to anymore) my whole life would be so different.
So it can go either way... just think about it really hard. If you really care for him and its real that I would go for it after talking to your friend.
Good luck

that can lead to bad feeling with your friend, even if she's done with him. I'm sure your friendship means more than this guy. There's plenty more out there. Besides, she problably has some insight into why NOT to date him. Like why she broke up with him, his issues or whatever.

Ask her how she would feel about it first. It probably would not be a good idea though. She may thing she can handle it, but then once she sees you too together, bad news. Save your friendship, look for another guy.

Ask your best friend if she minds if you talk to him. sometimes friends have a problem with it. If her friendship means a lot to you, then with her blessings, I guess then you can proceed to make a move on him.

That depends on whether or not you care to have a best friend. I say: "Lots of fish in da sea!" Cast your net ELSEWHERE!

I'd suggest no. It's going to be weird if you ended up hanging up with both of them.
