This week I keep getting muscle cramps in the calves of my legs, usually only one leg at a time. Do you know what causes these or how to prevent them. I am 59 yrs old and have a job where I am on my feet all day. However, it happens whether I work or not that particular day. Have you suffered this and what did you do?

The causes for muscle cramps are:
1.Muscle fatigue or strain from overuse, too much exercise, or holding a muscle in the same position for a long time
2.Dehydration or low amounts of potassium, sodium, calcium, or magnesium in the blood
3.Medications such as:
Diuretics, which can cause you to lose too much fluid or minerals
4.Statins, which lower cholesterol

As you stated you are standing on your feet all day which is causing your muscles to work overtime. Soaking your legs in a hot bath or Jacuzzi would help the muscles relax. If you can get a massage that would work out the spasm.

As others have stated eat bananas in case it's a potassium loss.

If the pain continues after trying the above methods see your medical doctor for further help.

Check with vet. Sounds like a large breed growth disorder as he's the right ageand size for it. There are a few different ones, some more serious than others. Vet may Xray and can also have an idea which disease it is, many times just by palpating legs to see which bones it is affecting. Shifting lameness could be Panosteitis but may be one of the others as they do mimic each other to some degree. There are different treatments for each; the more serious ones may require surgery and lesser ones, like Panosteitis which shifts from one leg to another, usually start in front (tho not always) and can be treated with specific anti inflammatories from vet and rest during an outbreak. Take your dog in for exam so you know what is going on and can start specific treatment as that is very important with bone growth and specific diseases.

Its either a lack of calcium or potassium, a simple blood test will give you the results. Or take a calcium pill and a banana and don't worry anymore.
