a keg is a small cask or barrel, usually holding from 5 to 10 gallons. It used to be used to hold gun powder, and were considered very explosive.
So in your phrase, it means: In imminent danger, in an explosive situation. This metaphoric term alludes to sitting on a keg of gunpowder that could go off at any moment.

In the old days of warfare ie: muskets and cannons etc. the gun powder was stored in barrels called kegs. And if you did'nt want to check out of life early you certainly would'nt smoke or make sparks around a full keg of black powder. BOOM. course in love that could be a good thing having an explosive moment. :)
