Me and my boyfriend recently got a dog together. We live together, and now we are starting to fight. He bought the dog, but I stay home with her 24/7. He does nothing for her, dosent feed her, let her outside, train her, take her to the vet, or even protect her when his son is mean to her. If I leave, im taking the dog with me, legally, can he do anything about it? Or is this the case where posession in 9/10 of the law? Serious answers only.

Thanks

If the dog is not licensed, do so with your name as the sole owner. I hope you have saved all your vet receipts as they should have your name as the person who brings the dog in and pays the bill. Maybe your vet will write up a short statement to this effect as well. Same with any and all other dog related bills. Start using a credit card that is in your name only and pay for all the dog's expenses with it. If your dog is not microchipped, have that done and have only your name on the paper work and in the registry. While this next suggestion is underhanded, you gotta do what you gotta do. Have any existing records such as licensing, etc, put into your name only. Get statements from any and all your friends that you are the dog's caretaker. You get the idea, start building a file to back your claim to this dog if your bf decides he gives a rat's butt about wanting the dog.

Good luck.

When I got divorced my dog was part of the settlement. I got to keep the dog. I was responsible for feeding, grooming and housing the dog. My ex had to pay regular vet bills. Any emergency bills were 50/50 and spay/neutering or elective surgery had to be approved by both. It worked out very well. He even took the dog every other weekend and a week each summer. We used to say how sad it was we did better with the dog than most do with children. The dog lived to be fifteen years old.

Legally if there are papers on the dog and his name is the only name on it, then he is the sole owner. If the dog is not papered and there is no paperwork proving ownership then it is a basic he say she say. You can take the dog. He may try to come and take the dog back, so you may have to get the courts help to prevent that. If you can prove that you have been responsible for all the vet bills/visits then the courts would side with you and he would have to pay any legal fees.

If you are reasonable adults, you have to decide what home would be best for the animal. If you work from home and have the money to take care of the dog, I would say the dog is better off with you.

is the dog registered in his name if not then no you dont have to let the dog stay with him . In other words does the dog have a rabies tag in the b/f's name ? if so then yeah the dog has to stay with him if not then no and if they come after you ,you can tell them that you were afraid the dog would be neglected if you left the dog with him .
