Look at the immigration department website http://www.immi.gov.au
Basically, you need to have a trade or qualification that is in demand in Australia, pass a medical and police check, provide proof of your ability to speak English, and part with a large sum of money.

Like Peter said. If you come from a non English speaking country (like me), you have to pass a test called IELTS. You must also have a career or job that it's on a list called MODL, which includes many jobs and trades, and be under 45 years old to apply. You can do the process on your own or contact a migration expert (Southern Cross Alliance is one). The process lasts about a year or so. If you're a British citizen, the process could last between 6 and 10 months.
All the information is found at www.immi.gov.au

There are many different visas for Australia - which particular category are you asking about?
If you would like to migrate permanently and you don't have any family to sponsor you, you will need to meet the following basic requirements:
- be under 45 years
- be qualified in a trade or profession
- have recent work experience in a trade or profession
- have good english language skills
If you don't know where to start contact a registered migration agent or complete an online eligibility assessment offered by many registered agents on their websites
