According to what iI have read, the shadow of death is anything that comes upon you that can ultimately take your life. According to my study bible; we are helpless in the presence of death and that is why it casts a frightening shadow, and there's only one person who can wlak us through it safely to the other side; that is Jesus, the God of life, our shepherd.

Despairing times where you feel you may 'seemingly', not make it out alive.
Vally=low,down,dejected.
shadow=not the real thing,only a representation of what is.
