every 3-4 hours is needed for the pup to have the proper nutrition.
The pup should of stayed with the mom, but some circumstances do not allow that to happen. As far as people saying you will have many problems down the road for doing this is NOT true, I have bottle fed more than one puppy because of certain situations and they turn out healthy. Hope u are not using cow milk and feeding it a specialated formula for puppies. Cows milk or baby formula will NOT give the puppy the proper nutrients.
good luck

He really should be nursing his mom but if that can't be done, feed him a milk replacer (you can get this at a pet store like petsmart or petco) from a bottle. When he's around 4 to 5 weeks old, start feeding him from a saucer, some baby rice cereal mixed with goats milk for a couple of weeks then start feeding him a good quality dry puppy food mixed with the goats milk for a couple more weeks and soon you can just feed him the dry puppy food.
As to how many times to feed a 3 week old, I'd say every 2 to 3 hours. Good luck and congrats on your new baby.

I have 2 Chihuahuas and I have had them both since they were 8 weeks old...3-4 times a day sounds like a lot...maybe I was a bad mom, but I bought Science Diet Small Bites for puppies and followed the directions on the side of the bag...I believe my girls were fed twice a day. Chihuahuas can get fat, so you have to be careful...I should know, cuz I have a lil' plump one :)

Do you know it is against the law to buy or adopt a puppy this young? Do you know it is against the law for a breeder to sell or a shelter, rescue, private person etc to give away a puppy this young?
You can be looking at some major behavior problems as well as health problems getting a puppy this young. I suggest that you take it back to be with mom for at least another 4-5 weeks.
At any rate he needs to be fed @ every 2 hours around the clock for at least another week. He needs milk from his mother that is what he is suppose to be fed!!!! If you don't do the smart thing and return him to his mother then you are going to need to get a good quality canine puppy milk replacer.

How sad. Did the dam die? I can think of no other reason for you to have a pup so young. Not only does he need his mothers milk but he is going to miss out on all the other things she would have taught him and he won't have the socialization with his littermates. A pup that young will need a top quality pup formula. At this age the mother is usually still providing stimulation to make him have bowel movements. I've had to raise a whole litter once for someone whose dam died and they were unable to raise them. We had to feed them and then rub their anus with a paper towel to produce a bowel movement to make up for the dam licking them to accomplish this. It should be fed every two hours around the clock so set your alarm. I really hope someone didn't just give you a pup this young!

Sorry, but I have to give you a bit of a lecture here...
You should never have gotten the pup that young. You are going to have many, many problems down the road. Shame on you.
Now, you can get special formula for puppies, and you must feed it every 2 hours.

This pup needs to be with his mom still, who gave him to you that young? Take him to the vet immediatly and see what they say. FFood will depend on size, weight, and ability to even eat solid food at this point. I'd say this was a BYB or puppy miller-you'll have to watch for behavioral problems since it will not be learning manner from it's mother. Good luck, and don't ever buy anoth puupy this young again. Wait until at least 8 weeks.

Who gave you a 3 week old puppy? Did you not have him at the vet and talk to the vet about this? Puppies that age eat on demand. I'm shaking my head right now that you took in a puppy without knowing how to care for it.
