Both of our mothers want us to have a traditional wedding so I want to do things to compromise that we are going away to get married.

I plan to take my mother with me to pick out my dress, and let her do some decorations for a very INFORMAL reception when we come back.

What can I do with my mother-in-law so that she will feel included?

Let her lick the invitations. We've all seen that Seinfeld episode. Hey, you could even get lucky!!

Maybe you could take her to the reception site to look at it if she hasn't already and let her give you some imput. Maybe you could take her to lunch and you could talk about the wedding and how much you have been dreaming of a destination wedding all of your life. You and your fiance are the ones getting married and spending your lives together not them.

I understand your plight. I was very close to my future mil when we married, and she has 3 boys so I was the closest thing to a daughter she had - so I didn't want to shut her out.

I understand wanting to have just your mom to pick out your dress. Can you include your mother-in-law with your mom for some "pre-dess" shopping. I wouldn't want to make my final decsion with her, but mine had fun just going around and looking with my mom and me. Then I made sure it was me, my finance, and her to go suit shopping.

It was hard for me because I am very close to my mom-in-law, but I don't like her tastes.

She did the shower for me - that's another good idea. And gives her control over something that isn't something that affects your wedding.

And find very small tasks - but key ones - that she can do. My mil can sew beautifully so I had her make the basket and ring bearer pillow. Try to find specific things for her to do.

You sound like a caring person, you'll manage this okay.

If you like her taste and get along with her, she could help you choose invitations and announcements; you could make an afternoon of it, and treat her to nice pastries and coffee, or lunch.

If you don't like her taste, consider making a sweet speech at the reception, and presenting her with her own bouquet of flowers, and honor her as the mother of the man you love.

But please don't forget the fathers in the midst of all of that!

Let her help plan the party, of course.
