The fact that donations in the Church was highly regarded and that giving money to the house of God granted you a place in heaven.
Rich nobles, merchants and monarchs could afford handsome donations but the poor was left out. Hence, it alieanated the peasents. Further more, the fact that the protestant movement started as a way to protest the papacy and the whole bureaucracy, people caught onto this and started the Reformation in Europe. This helped spread the word of Martin Luther who was ex-communicated by the Church and his teachings were of spreading good deeds and not wealth as a means for salvation.

Revelation 6 v 5. When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, Come and see. So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and the wine.
The first church translated the new testament from arimaic, the most commonly spoken language of the day, translated from the Hebrew, into Latin. They sealed the spiritual springs of water up, and charged a pretty penny for it. The time was ripe for Luther to put the sickle in and reap. And the earth was reaped.
